在不同的艺术家眼中，艺术有它不同的使命。嗜美之人把艺术看成是美的天使，擅长思索的艺术家将它看成是一种哲学的思辨，有宗教情怀的人视艺术为自己的宗教，而米勒只说“艺术的使命是一种爱的使命”。这句话是最有高度也最谦卑的。……米勒说：“我从未见到过欢乐，我所知道最愉快的事情就是静溢和沉默。”但谁说静溢与沉默不是更深的欢乐？……有天赋的不一定同时被给予财富。当艺术家，如果不是家底殷实，如果作品一时不被需要，注定要与清贫为伴的。因为绘画的那个过程，无法再去创造其他财富，相反会更加消耗，画布颜料等等工具，都需要用钱去购买。为了养自己的绘画，米勒也画过他深恶痛绝的巴黎的那些庸俗女郎。但他很快意识到这相当于是自己在走绝路，拐个弯，不见得拯救自己的艺术，只怕把未来的艺术生命也都搭进去。一旦意识到问题所在，他就宁愿清贫，而只照艺术的纯粹路线走。
